“The Wisdom of Ananse: Ceramic Sculptures” by Alex Awuku opening reception will be held on Friday evening at the Cotton Club Museum in Gainesville.
This event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 837 SE 7th Ave. The event is free, but attendees must RSVP to attend.
Light refreshments will be served at the premiere of the next exhibit, which will run from Feb. 13 through Aug. 29. The guest curator is Dr. Rebecca M. Nagy.
The works in this exhibition belong to a new series inspired by Ghanaian folktales about Ananse the spider, whose knowledge and insights into the human condition are, Awuku fears, at risk of being lost in the digital age.
Awuku is a graduate MFA student at the UF from Ghana. During his time at UF, Awuku has produced a large body of works ranging from small-scale to monumental. The conceptual foundation for his works lies in his experience as a Ghanaian, an immigrant to the US and a person of deep spirituality.
