- Bishop Kenny defeated Buchholz, 6-1, with Daly Stephens nearly pitching a no-hitter, striking out most batters over six innings.

Not much went right for the Buchholz baseball team on Tuesday night in Jacksonville.
For six innings, the Bobcats were scoreless and hitless, and host Bishop Kenny scored the only runs it would need in the first inning in a 6-1 win at Bob West Stadium.
“That was Bishop Kenny baseball to a tee,” said Buchholz coach Chris Malphurs. “They took advantage of walks, hit by pitches, we made one error behind the plate that cost us a bag, and they make you pay for it. A good Tommy Edwards team is going to do that. They’re going to bunt, they’re going to run, they’re going to be able to squeeze. They executed everything to a tee and just absolutely kicked our teeth in.”
Bishop Kenny (8-8) junior pitcher Daly Stephens entered the final inning with a no-hitter. Twice during the game, he retired eight batters in a row.
“Three pitches for a strike,” Malphurs said. “Our hitters looked off balance all night. We took really bad swings against the change-up, but that’s credit to him. It was a good pitch. So, he pitched us backwards early, but we missed fastballs. He did a tremendous job and, the thing is, we knew exactly what they were going to do. We knew exactly how he was going to pitch. We knew exactly how their offense was going to play. There just wasn’t anything we could do about it, just absolutely beat us.”
The Bobcats (8-6) entered the game with 14 straight scoreless innings after back-to-back shutout wins against St. Johns County schools Creekside and Bartram Trail.
But in the bottom of the first inning, Jacksonville University signee Dion Wilburn hit the first batter he faced and walked the next.
Following a bunt single by Bishop Kenny sophomore left fielder Andres Diaz to load the bases, senior catcher Timmy Pellicer doubled to left field to drive in two runs for a 2-0 lead.
Senior Braxton Dowdle made it 3-0 with a groundout to second, but Buchholz shortstop Hudson Sapp gunned down the lead runner at the plate on a fielder’s choice and Wilburn ended the inning with a strikeout.
Buchholz senior right-hander Cohen Lafler allowed just three runs the rest of the way, but Wilburn (1-3) took the loss with just one inning of work.
“We needed a sharp start on the mound; we talked about that we didn’t get it,” Malphurs said. “Being our only game of the week, we had a lot of bullets that we could fire, so we went right to Lafler and I thought he did a good job…when they get up three, then they tack on tack on tack on, it feels like 100.”
Bishop Kenny senior center fielder had an RBI in the second, senior shortstop Timmy Pellicer (2-for-3, 2 RBI) singled in a run in the third, and Diaz perfectly executed a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring leadoff hitter Cooper Revenaugh (1-for-1, 3 runs).
Down 6-0 entering the final inning, Buchholz broke up the no-hitter and the shutout.
With one out, junior Roen Kresak had the Bobcats only hit and senior Aidan Kastensmidt and junior Hudson Sapp walked to load the bases.
Sophomore designated hitter Ashton Norris hit a ball to left field that almost carried over Diaz’s head, but Diaz made the catch and Kresak scored to avoid Buchholz’s first shutout of the season.
“Yeah, just missed it,” Malphurs said. “Lot of balls hit on the screws tonight that hung up in the wind. We thought we’d get some help with the wind blowing out. It kind of was a crosswind tonight that knocked a lot of balls down. AK’s (Kastensmidt) ball he hit in the fifth (to center field) is out of a lot of ballparks, just one of those nights. We can be frustrated and mad, but it’s baseball. Sometimes it happens.”
Buchholz, which had its game on Monday night against Menendez (St. Augustine) at St. Johns River State College rained out, is off for the rest of the week for spring break.
The Bobcats will travel to Fleming Island (Orange Park) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.
“It was kind of a nightmare for us not being able to play yesterday, so now we’ve had three days off,” Malphurs said. “I kind of wanted to get that game in against Menendez…I thought having that game yesterday, seeing some live pitching on Monday, would have really had us prepared to come in here. It didn’t work out that way, and you saw the result.”
