- Dereon Tochterman scored 18 points for the South boys despite fouling out with 10 minutes left, helping secure the overtime win.
This past Saturday at Trenton High School, Chiefland SG/F Jon Adams made sure his last basketball game in an Indians’ uniform was a memorable one.
The University of Louisville football signee grabbed a shot out of the air that was short by The Villages Charter SG/SF Kymani Weathers and laid it in at the buzzer to force overtime at 86-all in a regional All-Star game.
Adams scored 24 as the South defeated the North, 97-93, in overtime, at The Prep Zone All-Star Showcase, an All-Star game for seniors only, which used college rules with two 20-minute halves plus the 1-and-1 free throw after seven fouls.
“We know he’s a football guy, but being an athlete like that and being able to hone in on your teammates and pull through at the end, even with fatigue setting in, that’s an excellent player all around,” said Keystone Heights coach Carlos Lamar, the head coach for the South. “Good guy, great guy. I wish the best for him, and I know that everything’s going to be great for him at Louisville.”

One of his two buckets in overtime was with 30 seconds remaining on an offensive rebound after Weathers missed a free throw.
Adams also made both free throws with 13 seconds left for a 97-93 lead.
“Our coach did a really good job of calling a timeout and let me catch my breath and I knocked down those free throws,” Adams said. “And then the big-time play, with 30 seconds to go, my guy got fouled and I just put the ball back.”
Weathers, who helped lead The Villages Charter to a state runner-up finish in Class 3A this season, finished the game with a game-high 30 points. He began the game with a dunk.
“I feel like I played great,” said the 6-foot-8 Weathers, who plans on doing post-grad somewhere in Florida. “I’m playing with more confidence, getting more work in and just stretching my game.”
Keystone Heights power forward Dereon Tochterman was next in scoring. Despite fouling out with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, he finished third in scoring with 18 points.
“It was a great opportunity to come out here,” Tochterman said. “I had a fun time playing against upper-level competition, seeing some of these boys out here already I played against in the regular season, but it was a good opportunity to be out here.”
Tekelvin Jackson of North Marion (Citra) was the fourth member of the South in double figures with 12 points.

The South had its overtime lead trimmed to one, 93-92, with 1:57 remaining in the extra period on consecutive steals and layups by Branford guard Anthony Washington
Washington, the Florida Dairy Farmers Rural Player of the Year, finished second in scoring for the North with 18 points.
“I felt like we had a good team,” Washington said. “We had all the pieces. We just kind of brought it together. It felt great to come out here and represent the Bucs.”
Baker County (Glen St. Mary) SG/SF Jamarion Goodman led the North with 29 points before fouling out with 1:12 remaining in regulation.
Branford’s Anthony Bailey just missed double figures with nine points.

Among the highlights of the game was an Adams block of 6-foot-6 Columbia (Lake City) forward/center Terrance Tolbert, a Neosho County Community College (Kansas) signee.
“They had thrown it down court and tried to dunk it a couple of times before,” Adams explained. “I said, the next time they try to go down there and dunk it, I’m going to go grab it and I went up there and grabbed it.”
Washington added his own highlight with a no-look pass to Goodman for a score in the second half. He scored 14 of his 18 in the opening half as the North took a 51-46 lead at the break.
In the girls game, which was four 10-minute quarters, it was all North All-Stars, who hit 18 3-pointers in a 108-44 win against the South, which was comprised of all Marion County schools.

Bradford (Starke) SF/PF Ar’Nayshia Griffin, a Coastal Carolina signee, scored a game-high 24 points in her final game in a Tornadoes’ uniform.
“It meant a lot to me,” she said. “Bradford has been everything to me. I wanted to leave a big mark, so just to put this jersey on one more time before I go to college to continue, it was an honor.”
Trenton SG/F Kayley Sloan added 20 points, including shots behind the arc.
“I think I played really well,” said Sloan, who scored her 1,000th point this season against Chiefland. “I feel like I had a team that contributed a lot and helped me, backed me up, and we just did very well together, played very well together.”
Not only did all eight players score, but they each hit a 3-pointer, combining for 10 3s in the fourth quarter.
Buchholz (Gainesville) G/F Taylor Booth and G/PG Ashlyn Young of Rural state champion Williston each scored 16 points, while Baker County’s Yamise Haygood added 14 points.

Belleview’s Cami Satterfield led the South with 11 points.
It was a great day of basketball, and one that Trenton enjoyed hosting.
“Yeah, it was awesome,” said North boys head coach Eric Bullis, who took his Trenton team to its first final four in program history this past season. “For us, coming off a really great season to be able to host these All-Star games, tons of great kids, good coaches, good fan support. You know, it was a fun day, and it was a great way to kind of cap off the season.”
