Key Points
  • P.K. Yonge girls soccer team won their sixth straight district title in 2024-25 and aims for seven in a row on Monday at 6 p.m.
  • P.K. Yonge defeated Trenton 2-0 in the Class 2A-District 3 semifinals with Paulina Cervantes scoring both goals.
  • Santa Fe boys soccer team seeks a third consecutive district title and will host Palatka Friday in the 3A-District 4 semifinals.
  • Buchholz boys team is the highest-ranked local boys team at No. 13 in Florida and will face Nease in the 6A-District 3 semifinals on Friday.

It’s a big weekend for girls and boys high school soccer as the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) district tournament semifinals and championships approach.

The best girls team in the Mainstreet coverage area over the last few years, and this year, is P.K. Yonge.

Two years ago, the Lady Blue Wave advanced to their first final four in program history and last year they just missed a second straight trip with a double overtime loss to Episcopal (Jacksonville).

They also won a sixth straight district title in 2024-25.

P.K. Yonge (9-4-3) will go for seven in a row at 6 p.m. on Monday.

On Thursday night in the FHSAA Class 2A-District 3 semifinals, top seed and host P.K. Yonge defeated No. 5 seed Trenton, 2-0, to advance to the title game.

Senior Paulina Cervantes scored both goals with an assist from her twin sister, Ellie, on the second goal. The Columbus State University signees have combined for 26 of the team’s 53 goals this season, with Paula leading the Lady Blue Wave in both goals (18) and assists (12).

Trenton had zero shots on goal as P.K. Yonge goalkeeper Norah Pancoast led the defensive effort with another clean sheet. It was the team’s 10th game without allowing a goal.

P.K. Yonge, which has been to four straight region finals, is the top seed in the district and currently the No. 3 seed in 2A-Region 1. They also have the highest ranking among area teams at No. 142 overall in Florida.

The next highest-ranked area team is Newberry, at No. 182, which is P.K. Yonge’s opponent on Monday.

The No. 2 seed Lady Panthers, who are the No. 4 seed in 2A-Region 1, defeated No. 3 seed Willison, 2-0, in the other semifinal. The Lady Red Devils (9-5-1), who are 7th in 2A-Region 1, are hoping for an at-large berth.

This will be the second meeting between P.K. Yonge and Newberry. The first matchup ended in a 1-1 tie on Jan. 9.

Meanwhile, the Santa Fe (Alachua) boys have an opportunity to become the only area team with three straight district titles.

According to the FHSAA rankings, the Raiders (9-4-3) are the second-highest-ranked team in the area at No. 135 overall.

“After having replaced four of five 2025 All Area Players, we are 60 seconds and two PKs away from being 14-2 after some quality thrashings by a state contender in Buchholz and, at the time, No. 1 nationally ranked Jesuit out of New Orleans,” said third-year Santa Fe coach Morgan Dall’Acqua. “We continue to change our lineup to find the best pairing of sound defense and a threatening offense, but as tends to happen this time of season, injuries start to come into play. With that said, this offers us a great opportunity to get quality minutes for some of our younger guys who have performed really well so far.”

Dall’Acqua said his team is focused on the “here and now,” with a district semifinal game on Friday.

The top-seeded Raiders will host No. 4 seed Palatka at 7:30 p.m. in the 3A-District 4 semifinals.

“If there is a game after that, we will worry about that when it comes,” Dall’Acqua said.

Senior Wayne Boone leads the Raiders with 11 goals.

“He’s kind of like Tim Tebow but with bigger quads,” said Dall’Acqua, who noted Boone would be playing somewhere at the next level. “Wayne does a great job controlling the tempo and finding lanes from the surface, but his value is so much more than that. He is a leader. He leads on campus, he leads in practice, he leads at game time. He has earned the respect of his team, which affords him a pretty special position.”

The Boone name is a familiar one in Alachua.

His brother, R.J., had a great career at SFHS with 16 goals spread out over 41 games, and his sister Maggie signed to play with Daytona State in 2024.

And they are not done yet, as Wayne’s younger brother, Owen, is a freshman.

“We knew that Owen was going to be a special player for us,” Dall’Acqua said. “We had hoped to limit his time and expectations, but after some injuries, we needed to get him some more time. He has proven ready for the task and has worked himself into a position of reliance.”

Owen is second on the team with seven goals.

“Owen by himself is a special player, but throw the brotherly bond in with Wayne, and it is a lot of fun (for Raider fans) to watch,” Dall’Acqua said.

Tonight’s match against Palatka (6-8-3) is the first of the season against the Panthers.

A win puts the Raiders in Tuesday’s championship against either No. 2 seed Keystone Heights (11-7-3) or No. 3 seed Eastside (5-8-3), who play at 5:30 p.m. today.

“We are taking them all one game at a time,” Dall’Acqua said. “We have built a season to be successful on the back end, but nothing is more important than the next 80 minutes. Everyone left playing right now are all fighting for one more game. I think our boys are poised for that fight.”

While Santa Fe seeks a 3-peat, the highest-ranked boys team in the area in 2025-26 is Buchholz.

The nationally ranked No. 19 Bobcats (MaxPreps), who were guests on “The Prep Zone” sports show this past Wednesday, are ranked No. 13 overall in Florida in the FHSAA rankings and No. 2 in Class 6A, and also second in 6A-Region 1 behind Niceville.

Four different players have double-digit goals.

Buchholz, which went unbeaten during the regular season this year along with the JV team, is the top seed in 6A-District 3 and will face No. 4 seed Nease (Ponte Vedra) in the district semifinals at 7:20 p.m. at Matanzas (Palm Coast).

All five teams in the district are ranked top 24 in the state.

Nease, which edged tournament host Matanzas (No. 24), 2-1, in Wednesday night’s district quarterfinals, is ranked No. 22. This afternoon at 5:30 p.m., No. 2 seed Bartram Trail (St. Johns), which is ranked No. 3 overall in Florida, will play in the other district semifinal against No. 3 seed Tocoi Creek (St. Augustine), which is ranked No. 10 in the state.

The district championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
