Lake City Police officers arrested three men early Monday morning following reports of gunfire around NE Martin Luther King Street and NE Aberdeen Avenue.

According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded around 12:11 a.m. to 652 NE Aberdeen Ave. after receiving multiple calls of gunfire

Officers found two black males—identified as Ronald Jones, 43, and Shavonte Mitchell, 23—at the address. A witness reported seeing Jones shooting a gun from the porch and both Jones and Mitchell were detained. Officers found Mitchell in possession of a Diamondback DB9 9 mm pistol and Jones with a Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol and located 17 shell casings on the porch. Both the firearms and casings were placed into evidence.

According to the release, officers then conducted a safety sweep of the residence to remove any people until a search warrant could be obtained. Marvin Damon, 66, was found asleep inside the residence with a Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 9 mm pistol in his left hand, which officers identified as being stolen. Damon was awakened and taken outside the residence. Officer found no other people inside the house.

After receiving a search warrant, officers discovered and placed into evidence: one Glock 19 pistol, one SGM tactical magazine, two AR-style magazines, two handgun magazines, a full box of ammunition, one black rifle and several containers of marijuana and unidentified pills.

“We are aware of the issues our community has been facing when it comes to firearms and gunfire,” said Lake City Chief of Police Gerald Butler in the release. “We have increased patrolling in those areas with reoccurring reports of gunfire. As this incident shows, we need the help of our community more than anything. We would not have been able to make these arrests and get these weapons off the street without the help of citizens.”

Jones, Mitchell, and Damon were arrested and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center without further incident. Jones and Mitchell were charged with firing a weapon in public and Damon will be charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and dealing in stolen property.
